For 30 years, John worked in the insurance broking and financial services sector running his own brokerage based in Leeds, serving both private and commercial clients.
He worked with a large number of businesses during this period ranging from small one man bands to large corporates and specialised in medical liability, agriculture, property and ecclesiastical risks.
John prides himself as being able to effectively converse with business owners and has a very good understanding of the risks and challenges faced by them. John is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and was a qualified Independent Financial Adviser.
During his career, John has built up a small property portfolio consisting of both residential and small commercial property and has a good knowledge of property finance and all matters relating to property ownership.
After the successful sale of John’s business in 2006, he moved to Cornwall with his family and unexpectedly purchased a rundown farm on the Roseland Peninsula, putting this back into a full working mixed farm with three very popular holiday cottages. Over the next ten years, John gained a considerable knowledge of agricultural matters and sits on a regional forum for the NFU. He also has a keen interest in tourism within Cornwall.
Following the sale of John’s farm, he joined Oxford Innovation on the Access to Finance programme in 2017 as a Finance Specialist. He works with all types of businesses helping them prepare for and raise finance. He is always willing to share his own business experiences with those wishing to start up, or who are running existing businesses in Cornwall.
